With a growing number of Chinese car brands entering the UK market, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for buyers to keep track of who’s who – and what’s genuinely worth paying attention to. XPENG may still be unfamiliar to many British drivers, but that could soon change, particularly with the arrival of the updated XPENG G6.

Launched in the UK less than a year ago, the G6 has already received a significant facelift and technical upgrade, bringing improvements across performance, charging, technology and efficiency. While visual changes are modest, this latest version represents a meaningful step forward for XPENG’s Tesla Model Y rival.

A brief introduction to XPENG

Founded in 2014, XPENG is one of China’s newer automotive brands, positioning itself less as a traditional car manufacturer and more as a technology company that builds cars.

Alongside electric vehicles, the company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence, robotics and even electric aviation – though for now, the G6 remains its sole model on sale in the UK.

The G6 sits in the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment, targeting premium buyers who might otherwise consider the Tesla Model Y or alternatives from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Subtle exterior changes, familiar fastback styling

Visually, the updated G6 sticks closely to the original design. Its smooth, aerodynamic fastback profile and full-width light bars front and rear make its Tesla-inspired intentions clear.

Changes introduced with the facelift are easy to miss unless you know where to look. The front light bar now stretches across the entire width of the car, with the XPENG badge relocated to the bonnet.

There’s also a revised rear spoiler and diffuser designed to improve aerodynamics, while the wheel arch trim is now colour-coded rather than finished in black plastic.

Interior upgrades and improved tech

Inside, the G6 continues to focus on space, minimalism and technology. The facelift brings an enlarged 15.6-inch central touchscreen, which dominates the dashboard, while physical stalks and steering wheel controls remain in place for essential functions – a welcome decision in an era of fully screen-controlled cabins.

XPENG’s AI-powered voice assistant plays a major role in day-to-day use and is reported to be more responsive and accurate than many rival systems. It can handle a wide range of functions, reducing the need to dive into menus, although the interface can still feel busy when manual interaction is required.

Material quality is strong throughout, with a bright and airy feel thanks to the panoramic glass roof. Space is generous in both rows, and higher trims benefit from standard massaging front seats.

Powertrains, performance and range

The most significant change with the facelift is the expansion of the G6 line-up. Previously offered only with rear-wheel drive, the range now includes a dual-motor all-wheel-drive Performance version.

  • Standard Range RWD: 68.5kWh battery, 248bhp, 0–62mph in 6.9 seconds, up to 292 miles WLTP
  • Long Range RWD: 80.8kWh battery, 292bhp, 0–62mph in 6.7 seconds, up to 326 miles WLTP
  • Performance AWD: 80.8kWh battery, 480bhp, 0–62mph in 4.1 seconds, up to 316 miles WLTP

All versions have a top speed limited to 125mph. The Performance model is currently available only in a Black Edition finish.

Ultra-fast charging capability

One of the G6’s most impressive upgrades is its charging performance. Thanks to an 800V electrical architecture and upgraded lithium iron phosphate battery technology, the G6 supports exceptionally high charging speeds on compatible ultra-rapid chargers.

In ideal conditions, the Standard Range can charge at up to 382kW, while the Long Range and Performance models support up to 451kW. On a suitable ultra-rapid charger, this allows for a claimed 10–80% charge in as little as 12 minutes – placing the G6 among the fastest-charging EVs on sale in the UK.

Pricing and value in the UK

Pricing puts the XPENG G6 in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y:

  • Standard Range: from £39,990
  • Long Range: £44,990
  • Performance AWD: £49,990

Equipment levels are generous across the range, and while some European rivals offer greater badge appeal and longer ranges, they typically come at a significantly higher cost.

Final thoughts

The latest version of the XPENG G6 doesn’t reinvent the car, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, it refines an already strong package with meaningful technical upgrades, improved performance options, and genuine class-leading charging capabilities.

For UK buyers seeking a comfortable, well-equipped electric SUV and perhaps looking beyond the usual European and American brands, the updated G6 is a compelling alternative, suggesting XPENG may not remain a niche name for long.
