What is salary sacrifice?

Salary sacrifice (or SalSac as we like to call it) works the same as private healthcare or a cycle-to-work scheme offered to employees by an employer.

If your employee wants to get a car using a salary sacrifice scheme, they will need to sacrifice part of their gross salary in exchange for a non-cash benefit. This amount is deducted from their salary, so whilst their take-home pay will be less, they’ll also pay less income and National Insurance tax. It’s a tax-efficient way for your employee to have the use of an all-inclusive insured lease covering servicing, maintenance, and more (plus impressive discounts on the car itself).

Your employee will pay Benefit in Kind tax (BiK) because they’re receiving a non-cash benefit from you (their employer). But the great news is that rates are exceptionally low for electric vehicles at just 3% of the P11D value of the car until March 2026. This gives huge savings against diesel and petrol, which attract much higher rates of BiK, up to 37%.

Salary Sacrifice FAQs

How does salary sacrifice work for a car?

With our salary sacrifice scheme, employees agree to exchange a portion of their pre-tax salary in return for a brand-new electric car. It’s like the cycle-to-work scheme but supercharged!

The employee picks their preferred electric or hybrid car, and instead of buying it outright, their employer leases the car on their behalf. The cost is deducted from the employee's salary each month (that’s the "sacrifice").

It’s a win-win for both employees and employers. Employees save on Tax and National Insurance Contributions (NIC), and employers also enjoy NIC savings.

Are salary sacrifice car schemes worth it?

Salary sacrifice car schemes offer great benefits for both employees and employers. Employees can drive a brand-new electric car at a lower cost by giving up a portion of their pre-tax salary, saving on both Tax and National Insurance Contributions. For employers, it’s a win, too - they can attract and retain top talent while also saving on National Insurance Contributions.

However, employees should carefully consider their financial situation before committing, as a reduced salary might impact pension contributions or other benefits.

If you're exploring a cost-effective and eco-friendly way for your team to drive a new electric car, talk to a leasing specialist today. Get in Touch.

Is a salary sacrifice car classed as a company car?

Yes. A salary sacrifice car is classed as a company car.

Although the car is funded through a salary sacrifice scheme, it’s still provided by your employer and is generally treated as a company car for tax purposes. This means the car can be used for both personal and business purposes, and employees will be subject to Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax based on the car's value and emissions.

What happens to a salary sacrifice car if an employee leaves?

If an employee leaves the business, the car agreement will usually end.

With Jurni’s built-in Life Event Cover, you may be protected from costly termination charges if the employee leaves due to redundancy, retirement, TUPE, ill health, long-term sickness, parental leave, or other significant life events.

If someone resigns or leaves during probation, early termination charges will still apply.

For full details, please check your Salary Sacrifice Agreement, including qualifying periods, exclusions, and limits.

What’s included in my monthly cost?

Your single monthly payment gives you an all-inclusive package that typically covers:

  • Comprehensive insurance
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • MOTs
  • Tyre and glass replacement
  • Breakdown assistance
  • Accident management

Everything you need for hassle-free driving, all rolled into one cost.

What is an 03 number?

Ofcom introduced 03 numbers to give organisations a single, nationwide point of contact, without extra costs for consumers. Calls to 03 numbers - such as the main Jurni number 03330 918 560 - are charged at the same rate as calls to 01 or 02 numbers from a UK landline, and may even be free if included in your mobile plan.
