Why is 80% better for your battery health?
Lithium-ion batteries deteriorate over time. Just like the battery in your smartphone, you’ll get fewer miles out of your EV’s battery the more you use it.
While charging to 100% is perfectly safe, in the long run, your battery will benefit from avoiding full charges. This is because lithium-ion batteries operate most efficiently within the 20-80% charge range.
This principle applies to all aspects of your car’s hardware. Opting for a gentler approach reduces wear and tear and helps maintain your car's longevity.
How do I stop my EV charging over 80%?
Keeping your EV topped up to 80% doesn’t mean you have to wait around at the charging station. Most EVs have controls that allow you to set the desired charge level. Setting it at 80% means you can leave your car charging while you do something else.
How much time will charging to 80% save me?
EVs don't charge at a constant rate from 0-100%. Going beyond 80% significantly extends the time required to reach maximum capacity. Some EVs take nearly as long to charge from 10-80% as they do from 80-100%.

Why does charging beyond 80% take so long?
Imagine your EV's battery is an empty theatre. The first people to enter are the quickest to find their seats because there’s nobody else in the way. But as the venue fills, it takes longer for people to get seated.
This is similar to what happens to the electrons in your EV’s battery at 80% capacity. At this marker, you’ll find it’s quicker to finish your charge and find another charger later when you’re low on power.
It's also considered good etiquette to conclude your charge at 80% at busy public charging locations so someone else can take your space.
If reaching 100% is a must for your journey, consider switching to a slower charger once you reach 80%. The final 20% could take just as long on a slower, cheaper charger while freeing up the rapid charge point for another EV driver.

What else can I do to look after my EV battery?
Most EVs feature built-in heating systems to keep the battery at the optimum temperature. However, it's worth keeping the temperature in mind to avoid extreme hot or cold conditions. For example, driving fast during a heatwave may not be the best idea.
Additionally, if you don't plan on driving your EV for an extended period, it’s best to leave the charge within the healthy 20-80% range.
But remember not to stress! Manufacturers have implemented many buffers and protections to ensure your EV's battery lasts as long as possible. So even if you do charge to 100%, it's likely there's still leftover capacity to keep your battery in good health.
