The latest update on the BMW 1 Series is so extensive that the German brand is calling this the fourth generation. The new model, coded F70, replaces the F40 launched five years ago and will compete with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf.

Performance & specs
BMW has simplified its 1 Series lineup by ditching diesel engines, manual gearboxes and the ‘i’ tag. The hatchback is now only available in three specifications: the 120 Sport, 120 M Sport and M135 xDrive.
The 120 becomes the entry point into the 1 Series range. It’s powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid three-cylinder turbocharged engine for 168bhp and 7.8-second 0-62mph sprint.
The new M135 utilises the same all-wheel-drive system as its predecessor but is slightly slower with 296bhp and a 4.9-second 0-62mph time. BMW says it has “significantly enhanced performance characteristics” due to its Adaptive M Chassis tech and sports steering setup.
Exterior & styling
Outside, you’ll notice that the 1 Series has replaced its classic kidney grille design. The new grille features a more modern blacked-out look with overlapping diagonal bars, while the sporty M135 xDrive has horizontal bars similar to other M models.
The nose of the new 1 Series is slimmer, cleaner and more angular than before with redesigned swept-back headlights and a more aggressive face.
At the back, you’ll find revised taillights and a tweaked bumper design. Standard models have no visible exhausts, whereas the M135 xDrive features a quad-exhaust layout.
The 1 Series retains its width (1,800mm) and wheelbase (2,670mm) but is 42mm longer (4,361mm) and 25mm taller (1,459mm). All models come with at least 17-inch wheels.
Interior & tech
Inside, the 1 Series has a huge, curved display that merges a 10.7-inch infotainment screen with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Most physical controls, including the rotary knob, have been removed in favour of the upgraded infotainment system, which now includes the latest OS 9 software and Quickselect shortcuts for climate control adjustments.
The standard interior is leather-free, with new seats designed for long-distance comfort. A smaller gear selector replaces the traditional lever, giving the cabin a modern and minimalistic look.
Release date & pricing
The new BMW 1 Series is scheduled to go on sale in October with pricing starting at £29,959 for the 120 Sport, rising to £41,000 for the M135 xDrive hot hatch.
