Alfa Romeo Junior Is Brand’s First Electric Car

Alfa Romeo has returned to the small SUV segment with its first-ever electric car. The brand-new Junior will be offered in two electric motor configurations alongside a petrol-hybrid.

Alfa initially introduced the EV under the Milano name but quickly changed it to Junior due to a dispute with the Italian government. The issue was that the name 'Milano' implied the car was being manufactured in Italy, whereas it's actually being built in Poland.

Performance & batteries

Naming complications aside, the Junior is the latest compact SUV to use Stellantis’ versatile e-CMP2 architecture. It shares this platform with cars such as the Peugeot 2008, Citroen C4, Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger.

The two electric options include a 54kWh battery with 100kW charging capabilities. The Junior Elettrica offers 154bhp and a 255-mile range, while the more potent Veloce has 237bhp plus a lowered sports suspension, upgraded front and rear anti-roll bars, bigger brakes and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Meanwhile, the petrol Junior Ibrida integrates a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, with a 48V starter-generator and 28bhp electric motor built into the six-speed gearbox. This means the car can run for short distances on full electric power.

Exterior & interior

Despite its structural similarities, the Junior stands out from its Stellantis stablemates with bold exterior styling. The front of the Junior includes sharp, ultra-slim LED headlights, Alfa Romeo’s distinctive plastic shield grille and a large, commanding air intake.

Inside, there are two 10.25-inch displays – a digital instrument cluster and a lower-mounted infotainment touchscreen. There’s plenty of space for passengers and a 400-litre capacity boot is one of the biggest in its class.

Three trim options can be combined with each of the car’s powertrains. The Technology pack provides hands-free electric tailgate access, connected navigation with a virtual assistant and LED Matrix lights.

The Premium pack adds an enhanced interior finish and an electronically adjustable driver’s seat with a massage function. Lastly, the Sport pack provides Sabelt seats, Alcantara upholstery and sporty exterior tweaks.

Pricing

Pricing has not yet been confirmed but expect the electric Junior to cost somewhere in the region of £35,000.
