Tesla has introduced a new entry-level variant of the Model Y, replacing the previous rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version with an enhanced Long Range RWD model. This upgrade pairs a larger, more efficient battery, with a single electric motor to deliver an impressive 373-mile range.
This marks a significant improvement of nearly 100 miles over its predecessor and outpaces rivals like the Audi Q4 e-tron by around 20 miles and the Volkswagen ID.5 by 30 miles, making it one of the most range-efficient vehicles in its class.
The Model Y Long Range RWD now has several energy-saving features, including a heat pump as standard and special low-resistance tyres. Buyers should opt for the standard 19-inch 'Dark Gemini' wheels to achieve the maximum range. Choosing the larger 20-inch 'Induction' alloys will reduce the range by 22 miles due to drag.
Priced at £46,990, the new entry-level is exactly £2,000 more than the outgoing model. Further up the lineup, the twin motor Long Range AWD costs £52,990 with a 331-mile range.
The new model maintains excellent performance figures too, with a power output of 342bhp, a 0-62mph of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 135mph. The maximum charge rate is 250kW at Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.
Unlike previous UK-bound Model Ys manufactured in China, the Long Range RWD is being produced at Tesla's Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory. This move aligns with Tesla's broader strategy to localise production for the European market, potentially improving availability and reducing delivery times for UK and EU customers.
