Hyundai has finally pulled back the curtain on the IONIQ 9, a seven-seat electric SUV first teased in 2021 as the SEVEN concept. In this article, we dive into everything you need to know about Hyundai’s new flagship EV.

What does the Hyundai IONIQ 9 look like?

The Hyundai IONIQ 9’s design stays true to the boxy yet rounded silhouette seen on the original SEVEN concept, with some tweaks for practicality and road readiness.

At the front, Hyundai’s signature pixel LEDs make a return. American models will feature a striking full-width pixel lightbar, while European models omit this feature due to regulatory constraints.

The SUV’s aerodynamic shape includes a rounded front end and a roofline that curves subtly before ending abruptly at the rear. This sleek design contributes to an impressive 0.259 drag coefficient when equipped with optional digital door mirrors.

At the back, there are more pixel LEDs. This time the lights stack vertically and wrap up and around the rear to create a ring effect that’ll make the IONIQ 9 stand out at night.

How big is the Hyundai IONIQ 9?

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is 5,060mm long, 1,980mm wide and 1,790mm high. The seven-seat SUV also has the longest wheelbase of any Hyundai model at 3,130mm, meaning lots of leg room in all three rows.

At over 5 metres in length, the IONIQ 9 comes with plenty of luggage space. When the third row of seats is folded flat, the boot can hold up to 1,323 litres.

This figure drops to 620 litres when all the seats are up, which is almost double what’s offered by rivals like the Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90.

What does the Hyundai IONIQ 9’s interior look like?

Inside, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 impresses with its blend of practicality, technology and sustainability. Available in six or seven-seat configurations, the interior has been designed with versatility in mind.

Opting for the luxurious ‘Relaxation Seats’ gives passengers in the first and second rows fully reclinable seats with leg rests. Choosing the six-seat layout unlocks swivelling second-row seats when the car is stationary for a lounge-like feel.

In the front, there’s lots of tech on offer like dual 12-inch displays – one for the infotainment and one for the driving information. Media and climate controls sit conveniently below the air vents with dials to easily adjust the temperature.

The interior design also incorporates premium, sustainable materials, with 16 interior colour schemes including six two-tone options.

How fast is the Hyundai IONIQ 9?

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 will be offered in three powertrains at launch. The Long-Range RWD derivative is the entry point into the range. This car has a 215bhp rear-mounted motor that allows for a 9.4-second 0-62mph.

Next up is the Long-Range AWD, which adds an extra electric motor to the front for a combined 309bhp output and a 6.7-second 0-62mph. At the top of the range is the Performance AWD which has 429bhp and a 5.2-second 0-62mph.

All cars come with a 124mph top speed. There’s no news of a performance N version just yet, but don't be surprised to see this released in the future.

How much range does the Hyundai IONIQ 9 have?

The entry-level Hyundai IONIQ 9 Long-Range RWD has the largest electric range of all the derivatives. This car has a 110kWh battery and will be able to travel around 385 miles on a single charge.

The other AWD variants have the same 110kWh battery but get a shorter range due to the added power. It’s estimated the Long-Range AWD will have a 320-mile range while the Performance AWD gets a 311-mile range.

How much will the Hyundai IONIQ 9 cost?

Official pricing for the Hyundai IONIQ 9 has not yet been released. However, with the Kia EV9 starting just below £65,000, it’s reasonable to expect the entry-level IONIQ 9 to fall in a similar price bracket with the highest spec Performance model costing closer to £80,000.

When will the Hyundai IONIQ 9 go on sale?

The Hyundai IONIQ 9 will launch in America and Korea in the first half of 2025, with a UK and European release later that year.
