MG Go! Concept Previews the New MG2

MG has unveiled the new MG Go! concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, offering the first preview of the forthcoming MG2 electric supermini.

Expected to arrive in 2027, the new MG2 will sit below the MG4 in the brand's growing electric car line-up and is expected to rival models such as the Renault 5, MINI Cooper Electric and Volkswagen ID.Polo.

While the MG Go! remains a concept, MG has confirmed it provides a close indication of the production car that will follow.

MG Go! previews the future MG2

The MG Go! has been designed as a compact electric hatchback with a strong focus on style and driving appeal.

Measuring around four metres long, it will be smaller than the current MG3 and firmly positioned in the competitive supermini segment.

According to MG's design team, the concept draws inspiration from several sporting MG models of the past, including the MGB GT, MG Metro Turbo and MG ZR. However, rather than adopting a retro design, the company has aimed to create a modern interpretation suited to a new generation of buyers.

MG says the production version will retain much of the concept's overall shape and proportions, although some of the more extreme styling details are likely to be toned down before launch.

Designed in Britain

One of the most interesting aspects of the MG2 project is its strong British influence.

The car has been designed at MG's London design studio, with a particular focus on the needs and preferences of European and UK buyers.

MG has previously stated that the new supermini is intended to appeal to customers who may not have previously considered one of the brand's vehicles, placing a greater emphasis on desirability and design than simply offering the lowest possible price.

That approach could help the MG2 compete more directly with fashionable electric hatchbacks such as the Renault 5 and MINI Cooper Electric.

Electric power and expected range

Technical specifications have not yet been confirmed, but the MG2 is expected to use MG's latest E3 platform.

The architecture already underpins the MG4 Urban and has been developed to maximise interior space while improving efficiency and helping keep production costs under control.

Buyers could be offered a choice of battery packs around 42kWh and 53kWh in capacity. If accurate, this could provide a driving range of up to around 280 miles on the WLTP test cycle, depending on specification.

Practical interior and modern technology

MG has not yet revealed the interior of the MG Go! concept, but the production MG2 is expected to feature a technology-focused cabin inspired by the latest MG4 Urban.

A large central touchscreen, digital driver's display and smartphone connectivity are all likely to feature, alongside a selection of physical controls for key functions.

MG's design team has suggested the interior will prioritise practicality and usability rather than adopting a completely minimalist approach.

Thanks to its dedicated electric platform, the MG2 should also offer impressive interior space for a vehicle of its size, making it a practical option for everyday driving.

Expected price and release date

The MG2 is expected to launch during 2027, with further details to be revealed over the coming months.

Official UK pricing has not yet been confirmed, but the new model could start from around £20,000, making the MG2 one of the most affordable electric superminis on sale.
