New Audi A2 e-tron revealed: Audi’s iconic small car returns as an EV

More than 20 years after the original A2 disappeared from Audi showrooms, the name has returned on a brand-new electric hatchback designed around efficiency, practicality and everyday usability.

With a starting price of £32,200, up to 397 miles of WLTP range and a choice of three battery sizes, the new Audi A2 e-tron is set to become Audi’s entry point into its electric range when it arrives in the UK in 2027.

Old name, new purpose

The original Audi A2 was launched around the turn of the millennium and became known for its unusual, lightweight design and focus on efficiency.

The new A2 takes some inspiration from that formula, but swaps the original car’s small petrol and diesel engines for an all-electric powertrain.

At around 4.3 metres long, the new A2 e-tron is considerably larger than its predecessor, while its rounded shape, short overhangs and distinctive rear end give it a clear visual connection to the original.

Audi has also put efficiency at the heart of the design. The A2 e-tron has a drag coefficient of just 0.24, helped by features including aerodynamic wheels, a largely enclosed underbody, wheel-arch gap reducers and an active cooling intake.

How far can the Audi A2 e-tron go?

Range is one of the biggest talking points around the new Audi A2.

There will be three battery sizes – 52kWh, 61kWh and 84kWh – with the largest battery offering up to 397 miles of WLTP range.

That makes the A2 e-tron particularly interesting for drivers who want a relatively compact electric car without compromising on long-distance range.

Audi has also worked extensively on the efficiency of the electric motors and drivetrain. The most efficient version is capable of using as little as 12.8kWh of electricity per 100km in preliminary WLTP measurements, making the A2 e-tron the most efficient Audi ever.

Audi A2 e-tron charging times

The A2 e-tron supports DC rapid charging at up to 183kW, depending on the version.

The 84kWh battery can charge from 10% to 80% in around 29 minutes, while the smaller batteries can complete the same charge in around 24–26 minutes.

The A2 also introduces bidirectional charging capability. This means the car can send energy back out to power devices through Vehicle-to-Load charging, or even feed energy back to a compatible home through Vehicle-to-Home technology.

What is the Audi A2 e-tron like inside?

Despite its compact exterior, Audi has designed the A2 e-tron to make good use of the available space.

Inside, there’s a distinctive dashboard with Audi’s panoramic display, combining an 11.9-inch digital instrument display with a 12.8-inch curved central touchscreen. An optional head-up display is also available.

The cabin also introduces some clever storage ideas. Audi is using a magnetic Fidlock attachment system that allows accessories such as cupholders and storage solutions to be positioned around the interior.

There’s also wireless charging for two smartphones, while the boot provides 396 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in place. Fold those seats down and capacity increases to up to 1,336 litres.

How powerful is the new Audi A2 e-tron?

There will be four power outputs across the A2 e-tron range, from 168bhp through to a range-topping 322bhp model.

All versions use rear-mounted electric motors, with the most powerful version producing 545Nm of torque.

Performance varies considerably depending on the model, with the entry-level A2 taking 8.8 seconds to reach 62mph, while the 322bhp version can complete the same sprint in just 5.7 seconds.

So, while efficiency is clearly the priority, the A2 e-tron won't lack performance.

How much will the Audi A2 e-tron cost?

The new Audi A2 e-tron will start from £32,200 in the UK and could further benefit from the government's Electric Car Grant.

That makes it Audi’s most affordable electric model and puts it into an increasingly competitive part of the EV market.

UK order books are due to open in October 2026, with the first customer deliveries expected in early 2027.

Audi is positioning the A2 as an accessible way into its electric range, while still offering the premium interior, technology and design you would expect from the brand.
