New ID.3 GTX Becomes Volkswagen’s First Electric Hot Hatch

The Golf-sized ID.3, that’s been in production since 2019, has received the GTX treatment. The sporty GTX badge has already been added to larger EVs in VW’s range such as the ID.4 and ID.5.

The German manufacturer also revealed a GTX version of its new ID.7 Tourer.

Specifications

The ID.3 GTX lineup includes two distinct variants: a standard GTX trim boasting 286bhp and a more potent GTX Performance trim delivering a powerful 322bhp output.

Just like the standard ID.3, the GTX models have a rear-mounted motor that sends power to the rear wheels, making it the most powerful two-wheel-drive Volkswagen to date.

In terms of acceleration, the GTX can go from 0-62mph in 6 seconds while the GTX Performance can do the same in just 5.6 seconds. Both cars have a top speed of 111mph and 124mph respectively.

Outside of the different power outputs, there are no technical differences between the two variants. Both cars output 545Nm of torque and feature the same 79kWh battery pack, marking a 2kWh increase over the standard ID.3.

The GTX’s range is estimated to be around 372 miles with both models sharing 175kW charging speeds.

Exterior

To give the ID.3 a sporty GTX flare, subtle changes have been made to the exterior styling.

At the front, there’s a new bespoke bumper, a diamond-style air intake design and LED ‘arrowhead’ daytime-running lights to add more aggression to the ID.3’s face.

At the back, there’s a diffuser and slick 20-inch ‘Skagen’ alloy wheels. The black elements of the hot hatch's paintwork have a shiny high-gloss finish too.

Interior & tech

On the inside, there are plenty of premium details that distinguish the GTX from the standard ID.3.

Sports seats with red stitching and GTX lettering come as standard. Chrome GTX lettering also appears on the steering wheel with additional touches of red throughout the cabin.

By the time Volkswagen’s new GTX models come to market, all models in the ID.3 range will come with a revamped 12.9-inch infotainment system that includes VW’s latest software updates.

Pricing & release date

Pricing has not yet been disclosed but expect the ID.3 GTX to cost around £50,000. The electric hot hatch should arrive in the UK this summer alongside the new ID.7 GTX Tourer.
