One of the most iconic badges in hot hatch history is officially making a comeback – this time with a twist. The new Peugeot 208 GTi isn’t petrol-powered, but fully electric, and it's shaping up to be one of the most exciting EV hot hatches we’ve seen yet.

Unveiled during the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans, the new Peugeot E-208 GTi revives a legacy dating back to the legendary 205 GTi. And while it pays tribute to its heritage, this GTi is all about pushing things forward, with sharp styling, impressive performance stats, and a focused chassis developed by Peugeot Sport.

So, what can we expect from the return of this pocket rocket? Here's everything we know about the E-208 GTi so far.

Performance

Peugeot has packed serious punch into the new E-208 GTi. Under the bonnet (or rather, beneath the floor), there’s a 276bhp electric motor – the same M4+ unit found in the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce and upcoming Abarth 600e.

That’s more than double the output of the original 205 GTi, and a huge step up from the standard E-208. With 345Nm of torque sent to the front wheels, the GTi accelerates from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds. That puts it ahead of rivals like the MINI JCW Electric and Alpine A290 in the sprint stakes.

To handle all that power, a front-axle limited-slip differential helps deliver optimal traction, especially through tight corners. A bespoke thermal management system keeps the 54kWh battery in check during spirited driving, ensuring consistent performance when it matters most.

Chassis and Handling

This is the first EV to be fine-tuned by Peugeot Sport, and their influence is immediately clear. The E-208 GTi sits 30mm lower than the standard model, with a 56mm wider front track and a 27mm wider rear track. That translates to a more aggressive stance and greater stability.

Suspension upgrades include revised dampers, a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, and performance-focused geometry. Grip is handled by Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres while red four-piston calipers clamp onto 355mm front discs for serious stopping power.

Drivers can also engage a dedicated “Sport” mode that sharpens steering and eases electronic interventions, giving enthusiasts more control over the car’s dynamics.

Design

Peugeot didn’t hold back on design. The E-208 GTi turns up the aggression with a deeper front splitter, a rally-style rear diffuser with integrated fog light, and a larger roof spoiler.

The 18-inch ‘Hole’ alloy wheels, inspired by the 205 GTi 1.9, are a standout feature. They are complemented by flared arches and distinctive red pinstriping, which extends to the badges, headlights, and trim details.

Inside, the sporty theme continues. A mix of Alcantara and leather features throughout, with red GTi accents on the seats, seatbelts, carpets and air vents. The signature small steering wheel gets perforated red leather and a GTi centre marker, while the digital cockpit includes performance pages exclusive to the model.

Range and Charging

While the focus is firmly on performance, the E-208 GTi still delivers respectable electric range. It uses the same 54kWh battery as the top-spec E-208, but with a few tweaks for thermal and performance gains. As a result, the official range is 217 miles, down slightly from the 268 miles offered by the standard version.

Charging remains competitive. The GTi supports up to 100kW rapid charging, allowing a 20–80% recharge in around 30 minutes – ideal for quick top-ups between blasts.

Price and Release Date

Peugeot hasn’t confirmed UK pricing yet, but early estimates suggest a starting point of around £38,000. That puts it in direct competition with the upcoming MINI Cooper JCW Electric, while undercutting the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce (expected to start from just over £42,000).

The E-208 GTi is expected to go on sale by the end of 2025, with full specifications, trim levels, and final performance figures being disclosed closer to the launch.
