Specifications
The new Renault 5 E-Tech will use bespoke electric car architecture. Its AmpR Small platform has been designed specifically for smaller EVs and will be utilised on the upcoming Renault 4 and Nissan Micra.
A noteworthy feature of the AmpR Small platform is its utilisation of a multi-link rear suspension, a feature typically reserved for larger and more expensive models. This engineering element improves handling and will make the R5 agile and fun to drive.
At first, the Renault 5 will launch with a 52kWh battery pack. This gives the electric hatch a 248-mile WLTP range. Later down the line, Renault is expected to add a more affordable entry-level version with a 40kWh battery.
Charging speeds haven’t been confirmed, but we do know that this will be the first Renault EV to feature vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging. This means the Renault 5 will be able to feed electricity back into your home or the grid.
Exterior
Concept images of the Renault 5 E-Tech were first revealed in 2021. These photos highlighted the striking similarities between the new electric model and its 70s and 80s predecessor.
Recent close-up images of the finished production version show that the EV’s design hasn’t strayed too far from its initial concept.
One unique design feature that’s made its way into production is the bonnet’s charging indicator. This feature uses a light-up ‘5’ motif to display the battery’s charge level.
Images patented by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggest that the EV will include charging ports on both front wings. This will enhance convenience at charging stations but should increase production costs.
At the back, vertical rear lights are connected by a black trim piece. The protruding rear lights have been purposefully shaped to lower air turbulence.
The Renault 5 will have five doors with concealed rear door handles and standard pop-out handles at the front. Measuring just 3.92 metres in length the car has extremely small overhangs and is shorter than the current Renault Zoe.
Interior
The inside of the Renault 5 has not yet been revealed, although the concept images of the exterior provide a brief glimpse into the EV’s minimalist cabin.
Drivers will be guided by Renault’s official avatar named ‘Reno’. Functioning as a ‘humanised co-driver’, this connectivity feature is designed to help users navigate the car’s interior technology.
Release date & pricing
The Renault 5 will be fully revealed at the Geneva Motor Show on the 26th of February 2024. Following this debut, the EV is anticipated to go on sale in the summer of 2024, with UK deliveries commencing early in 2025.
In Europe, where EV incentives are still strong, pricing is expected to begin at around €25,000. However, in the UK pricing is likely to be closer to the £30,000 mark.
