Rivian Reveals R2 Electric SUV

The American electric vehicle manufacturer, which was founded in 2009, has revealed its latest model, the R2. This car will join the R1T pick-up and the R1S seven-seat SUV in Rivian’s growing line-up.

A more affordable R3 crossover will follow at a later date.

Specifications

The Rivian R2 will be looking to compete with the popular Tesla Model Y upon its release.

Built on Rivian’s innovative new platform, the 5-seat SUV will come in three electric motor configurations: single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a tri-motor setup.

While power outputs are yet to be disclosed, we do know that the fastest configuration will be able to complete 0-62mph in under 3.2 seconds. This outperforms competitors such as the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6.

Customers will also have a choice between two battery sizes. The largest offering will provide drivers with a range exceeding 340 miles. Using a powerful rapid charger, a 10-80% top-up is achievable within 30 minutes.

Exterior

The Rivian R2’s blocky silhouette contrasts against its much smoother and rounded rivals.

The R2’s front has a clean but distinct design thanks to the brand’s signature vertical stadium headlights. These lights are joined together by a very thick lightbar which wraps around the bonnet line.

At the back, another full-width lightbar mirrors the front and sits above bold ‘Rivian’ lettering.

Measuring 1,700mm tall, 1,905mm wide and 4,715mm long, the R2 is slightly taller than the Model Y but shorter in length.

Interior & tech

The inside of the Rivian R2 has been made to last with sustainable and easy-to-clean surfaces. The 5-seat SUV uses upcycled wood trim and materials made from ocean plastics to create a modern and inviting interior space.

Behind a newly designed steering wheel that provides haptic feedback, is a broad driver display which sits next to a large central touchscreen.

Following glovebox complaints on its previous models, Rivian has introduced not one but two gloveboxes on the R2. This, along with the car’s front boot, provides drivers with plenty of storage space.

More noteworthy design features include a hidden torch located within the driver’s door and the ability to lower all of the car’s windows, plus the rear windscreen, at the same time.

Pricing & release date

With production set to begin at the start of 2026 in the US, customers in the UK will have to wait until 2027 to get their hands on one. Pricing is estimated to start around the £35,000 mark.

Rivian also has a smaller R3 and R3X model in the pipeline. These EVs should follow the R2 and will mark a new entry point into Rivian’s range.
