Tesla has taken a major step toward its long-promised autonomous future. Last week, the company live-streamed the world’s first fully driverless car delivery, showcasing a 15-mile journey completed by a Model Y with no human involvement – neither behind the wheel nor remotely controlling the vehicle.
The entire 30-minute trip, which began at Tesla’s Giga Texas factory, is available to watch on the company’s official YouTube channel. Filmed on a clear, sunny day, the footage shows the Model Y confidently navigating busy city streets, interacting with pedestrians, and handling real-world traffic with ease.
The Model Y used in the demonstration was running advanced software developed for Tesla’s upcoming Robotaxi fleet. Once it reached its destination, the vehicle was reverted to the standard Full Self-Driving (FSD) system available to current Tesla owners.
While the FSD and Autopilot features available today require an attentive human in the driver’s seat, this delivery marks the first time Tesla has demonstrated a completely autonomous drive on public roads without any human oversight.
Elon Musk shared his excitement on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point.”
“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.”
The historic delivery came just a week after the debut of Tesla’s Robotaxi service, which currently operates 10–20 vehicles within a geofenced area of Austin, Texas. Unlike the delivery vehicle, those robotaxis still include safety monitors for now.
