It’s been more than 6 years since the Tesla Roadster was first announced but finally, after a number of delays, the electric sportscar’s arrival could be just around the corner.
Elon Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to break the news. Musk said: "Tonight, we radically increased the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster. There will never be another car like this, if you could even call it a car."
He also claimed that the latest iteration of the Roadster will be able to go from 0-60mph in under a second thanks to a collaboration with his rocket company, SpaceX. This marks a significant improvement over the promised 1.9-second sprint time set back in 2017.
Musk’s claims got even more ambitious though, when he stated that the Roadster’s acceleration “is the least interesting part”. The billionaire replied to a comment asking whether the car could “fly a little” with an eye emoji.
In a tweet from 2018, Musk said: “SpaceX option package for new Tesla Roadster will include ~10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around the car. These rocket engines dramatically improve acceleration, top speed, braking & cornering. Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly”.
When will the Roadster be released?
Musk's latest statements indicate that the Roadster could finally arrive in 2025. The unveiling of the car later this year promises to be an exciting event with Musk saying: "I think it has a shot at being the most mind-blowing product demo of all time".
It’s been a long time coming for the Tesla Roadster with Musk previously suggesting launch dates of 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Several delays have set back the car’s release whilst the company have switched focus to the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck.
