Vauxhall has brought back an old name for its new budget electric SUV. The Frontera badge, which the brand last used in the early 2000s, returns on Vauxhall’s latest offering that’ll replace the Vauxhall Crossland.

The Frontera will be sold in both fully electric and mild-hybrid petrol forms from launch. The SUV will slot above the Mokka in the company’s line-up, promising customers a combination of space and value.

Underpinning the car is Stellantis’ ‘Smart Car’ platform that’s being used in the upcoming Citroen e-C3. This gives the Frontera an upright stance designed to maximise interior space. Drivers will get 460 litres of boot space which increases to 1,600 litres with the seats down.

Powertrain details haven’t been revealed yet, but we know that the electric Frontera will use an efficient and low-cost battery and motor combination. It’s anticipated that the range will land somewhere in the region of 250 miles.

Inside, Vauxhall’s ‘Pure Panel’ cockpit includes two 10-inch displays and a multimedia infotainment system. A new dashboard loses a lot of physical buttons in favour of a cleaner minimalist design.

The Vauxhall Frontera is expected to go on sale later this year with pricing starting around £25,000 for the cheapest option.
