Volkswagen ID.Polo: Everything You Need to Know

The Volkswagen ID.Polo is set to become the electric successor to one of the UK’s most recognisable small cars. Launching in 2026, it brings the iconic Polo name into the EV era with fresh styling, modern tech and a focus on electric affordability.

What is the ID.Polo?

Volkswagen first hinted at its next-generation small electric car with the ID.2all and ID.GTI concepts back in 2023. Two years later, the brand confirmed that the production model will officially be called the ID.Polo, marking the first time Volkswagen has electrified one of its long-established names instead of using a numbered ID badge.

The ID.Polo represents a shift in Volkswagen’s naming philosophy, blending its heritage with its electric future. It will sit alongside the existing petrol Polo, giving buyers the choice between efficient combustion engines or a fully electric alternative in the same class.

The car made its first public appearance in camouflaged form at IAA Mobility 2025, ahead of a full reveal in 2026.

Volkswagen ID.Polo design

Even in prototype form, the ID.Polo’s design direction is clear. It is the first production Volkswagen to adopt the brand’s new Pure Positive design language, which focuses on clean surfaces, confident proportions and a more expressive, upright stance than earlier ID models.

The ID.Polo measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, placing it squarely in the supermini segment while offering a more modern and planted look than the current petrol Polo. All versions will feature four doors, and three trim levels will be available at launch.

Underneath, the ID.Polo sits on Volkswagen’s new MEB+ platform, which underpins the brand’s new Electric Urban Car Family. This includes closely related models such as the Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq and upcoming Volkswagen ID.Cross, with the same architecture also set to support major updates to existing VW EVs from 2026 onwards.

Volkswagen ID.Polo motors, batteries & range

Buyers will have a choice of two different battery options, each offered with a range of power outputs. The entry-level version is expected to use a 37kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing an official driving range of up to 186 miles. Above this sits a larger 52kWh lithium nickel manganese (NMC) battery, which increases the range to a maximum of 279 miles on a full charge.

Charging performance is competitive for the class. The smaller battery supports DC fast charging at up to 90kW, allowing a 10–80% charge in around 27 minutes. The larger battery increases peak charging to 130kW, reducing the same charge window to just 23 minutes.

Four power outputs will be available in total. Models with the smaller battery come with 114bhp or 133bhp, while the larger battery is paired with 208bhp or 223bhp outputs. All versions are front-wheel drive.

The most powerful 223bhp model will wear the ID.Polo GTI badge, making it the first electric Volkswagen to carry the iconic performance nameplate.

Volkswagen ID.Polo interior & features

The Volkswagen ID.Polo is expected to feature a more driver-focused and practical interior than earlier ID models, with improved seating and steering wheel adjustment designed to help drivers feel properly positioned within the car.

Inside, the cabin layout moves away from the open, minimal look of previous ID interiors. A wider centre console will house physical controls, including a volume knob, cup holders and storage space for smartphones, giving the interior a more structured and intuitive feel.

Material quality is also expected to be a step up, with a greater use of fabrics and recycled materials to create a warmer, more premium environment than both the ID.3 and the current petrol Polo.

The digital interface is likely to follow Volkswagen’s familiar layout but with a cleaner, more user-friendly design. Physical climate control buttons are set to return, replacing the touch sliders used in earlier models, while traditional four-window switches will also make a comeback.

The ID.Polo will also be available with advanced technology for its class, including Travel Assist with automatic lane changing and traffic light detection, Park Assist Plus with a memory function, and Area View (a 360-degree camera system).

When will the ID.Polo go on sale?

The production-ready Volkswagen ID.Polo is set to make its world premiere in May 2026, with UK sales expected to begin soon after.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the entry-level model will be priced at under €25,000, which equates to roughly £21,935. This positions the ID.Polo as one of the most affordable electric cars in Volkswagen’s lineup and places it directly against rivals such as the Renault 5 E-Tech.

The ID.Polo GTI will follow as part of the launch line-up, bringing performance credentials to Volkswagen’s smallest electric car.
