The next-generation Volkswagen T-Roc will mark the end of an era for new petrol and diesel VWs in Europe.

The German carmaker plans to sell only electric models in Europe from 2033 onwards, with the upcoming Passat and next year’s Tiguan and Touareg joining the T-Roc as the brand’s final ICE cars.

These plans mean that it’s very unlikely we’ll get to see a 9th-generation petrol Golf. Its replacement will be a fully electric model that’ll keep the company in line with new EV legislation.

As it stands, the UK remains committed to its target of banning the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. On the continent, the EU has set the same target for 2035.

The final generation T-Roc is yet to enter into development so don’t expect Volkswagen's ICE range to completely disappear anytime soon.

The manufacturer has indicated that it wants to keep its iconic nameplates alive for the electric era meaning the Golf and Tiguan monikers could be sticking around for years to come.
