Legendary Ford Capri Returns as Electric SUV

Exterior & styling

The Ford Capri is back, but that doesn’t mean it looks like the iconic two-door coupe of the 1970s and 80s. The new electric Capri is a rakish coupe-SUV, measuring 4634mm long, 2063mm wide and 1626mm tall. The Volkswagen ID.5, which uses the same platform, is a fair point of comparison.

Despite its changed appearance, the Capri features design elements that pay homage to its storied past, such as the quad headlight layout, horizontal black grille, and subtle 'CAPRI' lettering.

Unlike its boxier Explorer sibling, the Capri boasts a sleeker silhouette, giving it the appearance of a high-riding saloon rather than a bulky SUV. The C-pillar design is reminiscent of the Polestar 2, another EV with a similar profile.

Performance & spec

At launch, two Extended Range models will be available in either standard or Premium trim. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive version offers 282bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds. This model has a 77kWh battery for a 390-mile range and 135kW max DC charging.

The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version delivers 335bhp, reaches 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds, and maintains a 368-mile range thanks to a slightly larger 79kWh battery with 185kW max DC charging.

Ford also plans to introduce a more affordable Standard Range rear-wheel-drive model later on, featuring a smaller 52kWh battery for a 250-mile range and 168bhp.

The new Ford Capri is built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, the same architecture used in the Cupra Tavascan, Skoda Enyaq, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Ford Explorer.

Interior & tech

Inside, the Capri mirrors the Explorer with a 14.6-inch portrait touchscreen that slides to reveal a lockable cubby space. The cabin is minimalist and modern, equipped with the latest Ford technology and a spacious 17-litre 'megaconsole' for storage.

The long wheelbase and spacious EV architecture provide ample legroom in both the front and rear. The Capri also offers 572 litres of boot space, 30 litres more than the Explorer.

To enhance driver assist functions, including driver alerts and evasive steering assist, Ford has equipped the Capri with 12 ultrasonic sensors, five cameras, and three radar devices.

Pricing & release date

The Extended Range rear-wheel-drive model starts at £48,075, while the more powerful all-wheel-drive version costs £52,075. The more affordable Standard Range rear-wheel-drive model will be released after launch, starting at £42,075.

The new Capri is set to arrive later this year and will be manufactured at Ford’s Cologne plant in Germany. This facility, which originally assembled the old Capri, is also where the new Ford Explorer EV is being built.
