A modern successor to the Smart Fortwo

The upcoming #2 is expected to continue that tradition. Although the final design has not yet been revealed, prototypes spotted in testing suggest the new model will retain extremely compact proportions, perfect for dense urban environments and tight parking spaces.

Early development cars appear to use modified Fortwo body shells while engineers test new batteries, motors and drivetrain components underneath. Developing a dedicated platform also allows Smart to optimise packaging, meaning the #2 could make particularly efficient use of interior space despite its small footprint.

Battery size and expected range

Smart has not yet confirmed official battery specifications for the #2, but early estimates provide some clues about what to expect.

City-focused electric cars typically use smaller batteries to keep weight and costs down. For example, the entry-level Fiat 500 Electric uses a 24kWh battery, while some upcoming small EVs are expected to use packs closer to 35–40kWh.

Rumours suggest the Smart #2 could use a battery just over 30kWh, potentially delivering a range of around 200 miles on the WLTP cycle. If accurate, that would represent a significant improvement over the final electric Fortwo models, which offered far shorter real-world driving ranges.

While those figures remain speculative, they would make the #2 far more practical for everyday urban and suburban use.

When will the Smart #2 go on sale?

The Smart #2 is still in the early stages of development, with test vehicles currently being used to evaluate new drivetrain components and battery technology.

Industry expectations suggest the production model could be revealed in late 2026, with customer deliveries beginning in 2027.

Once it arrives, the #2 will become the smallest and most affordable car in Smart’s electric range, sitting below the larger #1 and #3 models.
