The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.2 is expected to become one of the German brand’s best sellers when it eventually hits the market.

Here’s everything we know so far about the electric Polo replacement.

How big is the Volkswagen ID.2?

As its name suggests, the ID.2 will slot below the ID.3 in Volkswagen’s electric lineup. The ID.2 is being built on a shortened version of the MEB platform that’s shared with the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5.

The ID.2 will be similar in size to the Volkswagen Polo making it a popular option for urban drivers prioritising compactness and manoeuvrability over extended driving ranges.

Its flexible MEB platform means that the ID.2 is expected to offer a surprising amount of room despite its compact look. Drivers can expect interior space that’s comparable to the current VW Golf.

So far we only have concept photos of the Volkswagen ID.2all, but Volkswagen’s new design chief, Andreas Mindt, says they've worked hard to ensure the final production cars look "even better" than the concept design.

What does the Volkswagen ID.2’s interior look like?

Inside, the ID.2 will continue with the minimalist, tech-centric design language seen across the ID range.

The cabin will have a sleek, uncluttered layout with a central touchscreen providing access to navigation, entertainment and vehicle settings.

Andreas Mindt has previously expressed a preference for physical buttons over touch controls, so expect to find a more traditional switchgear inside the ID.2’s cockpit.

What is the Volkswagen ID.2’s range?

Battery range has often been a problem for small electric hatchbacks. Volkswagen is hoping to address this with a choice of two battery options: a 38kWh battery for an estimated 200-mile range, and a 56kWh battery for an estimated 280-mile range. These figures would place the ID.2 in line with the best electric vehicles (EVs) in its segment.

The ID.2 will also support DC fast charging, allowing the battery to reach an 80% charge in about 30 minutes, depending on the charger.

How fast is the Volkswagen ID.2?

The ID.2 is different from previous ID models as it’ll be the first to feature front-wheel drive with a single motor on the front axle. This change lowers production costs and will see the charging port moved to the front wing.

While the ID.2’s performance is still under wraps, the concept ID.2all showcased a 223bhp motor and a sub-7-second 0-62mph time.

The production version is likely to focus more on range and efficiency with around 200bhp, however, a high-performance GTI version is rumoured to be in development and could feature the concept’s sportier powertrain.

How much will the Volkswagen ID.2 cost?

Affordability is a key part of the ID.2’s appeal, as Volkswagen aims to make an electric car "for the people".

Pricing is yet to be confirmed but the version with the smaller battery is expected to cost around £22,000 while the bigger battery spec could cost around £26,000.

Volkswagen is looking to price the ID.2 competitively against electric rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-208, MG4 and BYD Dolphin.

When will the Volkswagen ID.2 go on sale?

The ID.2 is set for a UK launch in 2026.

Volkswagen has already started marketing the vehicle, so a final production version should be revealed in the coming months. The range-topping GTI version is expected to join the lineup later.
