Smart is a German brand best known for its range of eco-friendly city cars. Since 2019, the company has become a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese car giant Geely.

Smart has gone on to expand its lineup with a series of crossovers using Geely’s electric SEA architecture, including the Smart #1 in 2022 and the Smart #3 in 2023.

Now, Smart is set to release its most versatile vehicle yet — the Smart #5, a rugged SUV that will hit roads in 2025. Here’s everything we know so far.

Exterior & styling

The Smart #5 is the brand’s boldest car to date, featuring a boxy silhouette and very short front and rear overhangs.

At 4,705mm in length, the Smart #5 is around 50mm longer than the Skoda Enyaq and 50mm shorter than the Tesla Model Y.

The #5 has a naturally rugged look, even without the ‘Adventurers' Collection’ off-road package, which adds roof-mounted lights, a roof rack, side steps, a ladder, and a storage box.

Other distinctive features, like frameless doors and a sweeping panoramic glass roof, are carried over from the brand's smaller SUVs.

From the side, you'll notice the striking alloy wheels with "floating" wheel caps that keep the Smart logo upright as the wheels spin—a feature also found on luxury cars like Rolls-Royce.

Interior & tech

Inside, there’s a total of three screens. Two 13-inch AMOLED displays cover the centre console and passenger side of the dash, while a 10.3-inch ultra HD display sits behind the steering wheel.

There’s also a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display that projects key information directly onto the windscreen and a premium Sennheiser sound system that gives an immersive audio experience.

In addition to the premium tech, Mercedes-Benz has also provided plenty of practicality. The interior boasts 34 storage compartments, seats that can fold completely flat, and a 72-litre “frunk”.

Performance & spec

Technical details for the Smart #5 are yet to be officially released. Though it’s rumoured there’ll be a choice between single and dual-motor powertrains.

We know the #5 has 800v architecture and a massive 100kWh battery, delivering around 350 miles of range on a single charge. Smart also claims that charging from 10-80% will take just 15 minutes, making it one of the market's fastest-charging electric vehicles (EVs).
