The Volkswagen ID.Polo GTI marks a major moment for Volkswagen performance cars, becoming the first fully electric model to wear the famous GTI badge.
Positioned at the top of the upcoming ID.Polo range, the new electric hot hatch combines familiar GTI styling cues with front-wheel-drive performance, adaptive suspension and up to 223bhp. It also arrives as competition in the rapidly growing electric hot hatch segment.
Here’s everything we know so far.
Familiar GTI design
Volkswagen has deliberately kept the ID.Polo GTI instantly recognisable as a GTI.
At the front, the car features the signature red grille strip seen on previous GTI models, alongside revised bumpers, honeycomb detailing and GTI badging. Wider styling elements and a lower stance help give the ID.Polo GTI a sportier appearance compared with the standard model.
Around the back, a roof spoiler and diffuser-inspired rear bumper continue the more aggressive look, while standard 19-inch alloy wheels complete the design.
Volkswagen says the styling has also been developed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind, helping maximise range without compromising the GTI’s sporty character.
Performance and power
The ID.Polo GTI uses a front-mounted electric motor producing 223bhp and 290Nm of torque.
That allows the car to accelerate from 0–62mph in 6.8 seconds, while top speed is limited to 109mph.
Power is sent to the front wheels through an electronically controlled locking differential designed to improve traction and handling during harder driving.
Volkswagen has also upgraded the chassis significantly over the standard ID.Polo. Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control suspension comes as standard, alongside stiffer springs, revised anti-roll bars and progressive steering.
Drivers will also be able to select multiple driving modes, including a dedicated GTI mode that sharpens throttle response, steering and chassis settings.
Battery, range and charging
The ID.Polo GTI uses a 52kWh battery pack.
Volkswagen is targeting a WLTP range of up to around 263 miles, depending on specification and driving conditions. This is slightly lower than the standard ID.Polo due to the GTI’s performance-focused setup.
Rapid charging at up to 105kW is supported, allowing a 10–80% charge in approximately 24 minutes when connected to a suitable DC rapid charger.
Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is also available, allowing electrical devices to be powered directly from the car.
Interior and technology
Inside, the ID.Polo GTI combines modern technology with several classic GTI-inspired details.
Sports seats with tartan upholstery reference earlier GTI models, while red accents, contrast stitching and GTI branding appear throughout the cabin.
A 10.25-inch digital driver display and central infotainment touchscreen are both included, with GTI-specific graphics and performance displays available. Volkswagen has also introduced a retro-inspired display mode designed to resemble the instrument layout of older GTI models.
The ID.Polo GTI also offers more passenger and boot space than the outgoing petrol-powered Polo GTI, thanks to its dedicated electric platform.
Growing electric hot hatch segment
The arrival of the ID.Polo GTI highlights how quickly the electric hot hatch market is expanding.
Rivals such as the Alpine A290, Vauxhall Corsa GSE, Peugeot E-208 GTi and Cupra Raval VZ are all helping bring performance-focused electric superminis back into the spotlight.
Rather than focusing purely on outright speed, Volkswagen says the ID.Polo GTI aims to retain the everyday usability and balanced driving experience traditionally associated with GTI models.
Price and release date
The Volkswagen ID.Polo GTI is expected to arrive in the UK in early 2027.
Official pricing has not yet been confirmed, but early indications suggest a starting price of around £34,000, depending on specification.
